Gain fundamental insights to world of Operations Management from award winning Professor Gad Allon
Description:
A Faculty Project Course - Best Professors Teaching the World

This course provides a general introduction to operations management. This course aims to (1) familiarize you with the major operational problems and issues that confront managers, and (2) provide you with language, concepts, insights and tools to deal with these issues in order to gain competitive advantage through operations.

This course should be of particular interest to people aspiring a career in designing and managing business processes, either directly (V.P. of Ops, COO) or indirectly (e.g. management consulting). The course should also be of interest to people who manage interfaces between operations and other business functions such as finance, marketing, managerial accounting and human resources.

Finally, a working knowledge of operations, which typically employs the greatest number of employees and requires the largest investment in assets, is indispensable for general managers and entrepreneurs.

We will see how different business strategies require different business processes, and vice versa, how different operational capabilities allow and support different strategies to gain competitive advantage. A process view of operations will be used to analyze different key operational dimensions such as capacity management, flow time management, supply chain management, and quality management. We will also discuss developments such as lean operations, just-in-time operations, and time-based competition.

Introduction to Financial Modeling Free online course
Introduction to Financial Modeling Free online course
Learn to build a simple integrated financial statement model.
This course will teach you how to use two years of historical income statement data and two years of historical balance sheet data to build a fully integrated financial statement model. It is designed for those new to financial models.
Description:
Section 1 will introduce the accounting equation and the three primary financial statements in the context of building a financial model. The content starts with the accounting equation, which is the single most important concept in accounting.

The remaining three videos introduce the financial statements one at a time with a focus on the relationships that are important as you build financial models. All of the material is provided via video-driven instruction with notes in pdf format to help follow along.

Section 2 will walk through integrating the three primary financial statements and creating a five-year projection. The first video provides a quick overview of the process. It is an easier process to grasp if thought of as a series of steps. It will also make it easier to measure progress as you work through the longer video. The video in Lecture 2 will walk you through the process of building the model cell by cell.
Download free:
Because you are walking through the entire process of building a model, the video in Lecture 2 runs long: 35 minutes in total. My advice would be to download the excel template attached to this lecture and build the model as the video progresses. Building the model yourself is the best way to fully understand the process.

What Will I Learn?

  • define risk management;
  • describe features of a risk management framework;
  • define risk governance and describe elements of effective risk governance
  • explain how risk tolerance affects risk management
  • describe risk budgeting and its role in risk governance
  • identify financial and non-financial sources of risk and describe how they may interact
  • describe methods for measuring and modifying risk exposures and factors to consider in choosing among the methods.
Risk—and risk management—is an inescapable part of economic activity. People generally manage their affairs in order to be as happy and secure as their environment and resources will allow. But regardless of how carefully these affairs are managed, there is risk because the outcome, whether good or bad, is seldom predictable with complete certainty.

There is risk inherent in nearly everything we do, but this course will focus on economic and financial risk, particularly as it relates to investment management.

The questions that this course will address include the following:

  • What is risk management, and why is it important?
  • What risks does an organization (or individual) face in pursuing its objectives?
  • How are an entity’s goals affected by risk, and how does it make risk management decisions to produce better results?
  • How does risk governance guide the risk management process and risk budgeting to integrate an organization’s goals with its activities?
  • How does an organization measure and evaluate the risks it faces, and what tools does it have to address these risks?
This course is organized in five sections, the first section gives an Introduction to the concept of Risk Management, Section 2 describes the risk management process, and Section 3 discusses risk governance and risk tolerance. Section 4 covers the identification of various risks, and Section 5 addresses the measurement and management of risks.

Who is the target audience?

  • This course is ideal for a person seeking an introduction to Risk Management: Economic and Financial Risk
  • Students appearing in CFA L1 exam for a second time must take this course as it is an addition in the 2016 curriculum
  • Students enrolled for my Portfolio Management course do not need to take this as it has been embedded in that course
