What is the Scope management?

Scope management is the process of defining what work is required and then making sure all of that work – and only that work – is done. Scope management plan should include the detailed process of scope determination, its management, and its control.

Scope Management Process:

  • Collect Requirements: Determining and documenting stakeholder needs
  • Define Scope: Developing detailed description of project and product
  • Create WBS: Subdividing project deliverables and project work into smaller, more manageable parts
The purpose of Scope Management is to ensure the project includes all the work required, and only the work required, for completing the project successfully. In scope management, the emphasis is on identifying and controlling what is or is not included in the project.

What is the Work breakdown structure?

A work breakdown structure (WBS) is a key project deliverable that organizes the team's work into manageable sections. The Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) defines the work breakdown structure as a "deliverable-oriented hierarchical decomposition of the work to be executed by the project team.

WBS Purpose:

  • Project Scope: Shows all project activities that will be necessary to do
  • Project Chart: Project organization shows structural hierarchy of project team. WBS shows structural hierarchy of project work to be done
  • Project Time & Cost Estimation: Work packages are used to estimate time & cost, and they are rolled-up (aggregated)upwards
  • Project Measurement & Control: Each work package is assigned a cost account, and its status is tracked
